Style by Director

Films tell a story, but clothes make the character. Fashion and film's long entwined romance has made mavericks and maidens alike. From Judy Garland's ruby slippers to Harrison Ford's fedora, fashion has helped give shape to the stories we love. Patterns, weaves and color all influence style but often times those styles transcend a single film. Fellini's inspiration for La Dolce Vita was a Balenciaga dress. Girorgio Armani transformed Richard Gere in 'American Gigolo'. The Calvin Klein dress Alicia Silverstone wore in 'Clueless' became an icon. Decades of Hepburn and Givenchy. Fashion can provide layered insights to a place, time and personality often overlooked on first viewing. In celebration of this Sunday's 91st Oscars we pay tribute to some of the industry's idols behind the camera.
